Demonstrating the Sound Sample Player, E-Stitches Bristol

Posted on June 11, 2019January 2, 2025

Workshop at e-stitches, Bristol to explore the Sound Sample Player as a learning and prototyping tool to activate textile sensors with sound samples. The Sound Sample Player is an analog textile sensor demo box made in partnership with Mika Satomi from Koba, https://www.kobakant.at/KOBA/sound-sample-player/. It extends the ability to use sensors that are driven by changes in resistance rather than capacitance to play back mp3 sound files as you manipulate the textile sensor connected to a pair of crocodile clips. Each connection channel is equipped with adjustable voltage dividers (1k-1M ohm range) to select suitable range for the textile sensors. The readings of the sensors are displayed as LED allays.

For many in the group the Sound Sample Player was a useful addition to developing e-textiles as it:

  • Makes playing around with sound more accessible
  • Breaks down barriers to entry
  • “Removes the fear” participant comment
  • Provides an “experience with response” participant comment
