Funded by the VOICE project, the film raises awareness of the Ealing Repair Cafe’s activities and ethos particularly to support skill building, wellbeing and emotional resilience in the local community. The film describes small changes and stories of sustainability as people engage in repair and upcycling actions to increase the life of clothes. It follows a pair of jeans that are reimagined into a new garment and shows the textile techniques involved in its makeover.
Designed to amplify the work of ERC and demonstrate to local councils, businesses and organisations their work, revealing its significance for the local community. It reveals the groups’ values and competencies and advocates for various kinds of support, particularly financial, spatial or other resources to increase ERC impact and make it easier for them to operate.
There was a strong emphasis on the social and emotional outcomes connected to learning. In particular the group acknowledged the sharing of skills can lead to positive self belief, confidence and self value. These emotional dimensions weren’t only experienced by the learners but also by those teaching the skills. Social benefit is mutual and and balanced leading to a valuable interaction.
Film Repository
The textile technique films were developed as teaching aids to demonstrate and guide people through the range of textile techniques employed by the group. They serve as an accessible, visual resource for novice learners to practice the techniques when working away from the group. The textile technique films are located in a dedicated repository to make them accessible to ERC and can be embedded in the website or shared on social media platforms.
